Lip Injections

Introduction

Introduction to Lip Injections

As time passes, the lips begin to lose volume, causing them to appear thinner. However, individuals who desire fuller lips now have an option – lip augmentation with fillers, which are FDA-approved and authorized for sale in Canada by Health Canada. At Skinjectables Cosmetic Clinic in Toronto, lip fillers such as Teosyal and Juvederm are available to make your lips appear more voluminous, as well as to improve symmetry and definition. A beautiful, full pout will optimize your overall appearance and give you a younger, more supple smile.

What Are Lip Injections?

Full, luscious lips make a face look more beautiful and are an indicator of youthfulness and good health. If your lips are thinner or smaller than you would like as a result of genetics or aging, lip augmentation via a lip injection procedure might be perfect for you. While “overdrawing” your lip outline with makeup can help make your lips look fuller for a day, lip enhancement with dermal fillers creates a more enduring solution that feels and looks more natural and won’t wear off at the end of the day.

The “vermilion border,” the sharp line between the lips and the surrounding skin, is the typical site that is enhanced using lip injections. By injecting a dermal filler into this part of the lip, a cosmetic nurse injector can shape, define, and enhance the lip’s appearance. It is also possible to enhance the “Cupid’s bow,” the V-shaped area in the center of the lip.

Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance within the human body. Hyaluronic Acid helps the skin retain moisture, which adds to its volume and aids in maintaining softer, more youthful-looking skin and plumper-looking lips. Hyaluronic acid also promotes the production of collagen. At the Skinjectables Cosmetic Clinic in Toronto, Canada, we offer lip fillers that consist of Hyaluronic Acid. We frequently use the Juvéderm product line when performing lip injection procedures at our Toronto clinic.

Traditional Fillers vs. Resilient Hyaluronic Acid Fillers

The difference between traditional fillers and RHA fillers is that resilient hyaluronic acid fillers have the ability to recoil and then spring back to their initial form. For example, after being bent, stretched, compressed, or altered during facial expressions, they bounce back to their original shape. These resilient HA fillers deliver a very natural-looking result. In addition, resilient hyaluronic acid fillers take longer for the body to metabolize; therefore, patients enjoy longer-lasting results than those typically seen with traditional dermal fillers.

While Teosyal® offers four grades of RHA Dynamic Fillers, at the Skinjectables Cosmetic Clinic in Toronto, Canada, we offer three of them. The grade a resilient hyaluronic acid filler receives is based on its concentration of HA and the product’s intensity. These variations determine which areas of the face and wrinkle depth (or hollows) each product is best suited to address.

Juvéderm & RHA Products

JUVEDERM

We frequently use the Juvéderm product line when performing lip injection procedures at our Toronto clinic. All the lip fillers used for lip augmentation from this product line consist of hyaluronic acid (HA).

Juvéderm has a line of fillers that can be used to address various facial characteristics that occur with age. Additionally, Juvéderm Ultra is approved by the FDA for adding volume to the lips in adults aged 22 years or older.

RHA

One of the biggest concerns for people who are considering dermal filler injections is a fear of looking unnatural after their procedure: The RHA Dynamic Fillers by Teosyal® are excellent for addressing this concern. In addition, choosing a Nurse Injector who has experience performing these kinds of injections can make an enormous difference in the final result.

  • This product is designed to add volume to and plump the lips. Juvéderm Ultra is ideal for individuals with thinning lips due to the natural aging process or for those who desire more voluminous lips.

  • This dermal filler is very similar to Juvéderm Ultra, but it is thicker. For this reason, it is used to correct deep folds, severe wrinkles, lines from the corners of the mouth that extend downward toward the jawline, as well as to add volume to the cheeks. Juvéderm Ultra Plus plumps the skin, reducing the appearance of wrinkles. All of the dermal filler products that we carry at Skinjectables in Toronto, Canada, contain lidocaine. This dermal filler is also used for what is referred to as the ‘liquid face lift’ and can be used to rejuvenate the hands.

  • This product was created to address fine lines. Our Injection Experts typically use Juvéderm® Refine to address crow’s feet, superficial forehead lines, and smile lines.

  • Used to treat fine lines and surface lines. RHA 1 is ideal for wrinkles on the neck, around the eyes, on the forehead, and in the perioral zone.

  • This filler is frequently used to treat wrinkles and lines of average to medium depth. Our Nurse Injectors typically use RHA 2 between the eyebrows, around the eyes, in the marionette lines, and in the perioral zone.

  • This filler is used to treat deep, dynamic, severe wrinkles such as nasolabial folds and marionette lines.

  • This filler is used for creating and restoring volume in broader areas of the face, such as the cheeks, the nasolabial folds, the lower face, and the jaw.

Who Are the Best Candidates for Lip Injections?

procedcure-candidates

Candidates seeking lip enhancement typically aim to achieve a fuller, more luscious appearance. If your upper lip or both of your lips disappear into a thin line when you smile, you may be a good candidate for lip injections.

Some candidates want to balance out the appearance of uneven or asymmetrical lips, enhance the shape of their mouth, or minimize the amount of their gum line that shows when they smile.

If you are in good overall physical health, have a positive attitude, and realistic goals and expectations for lip augmentation, you are likely a good candidate for lip injections in Toronto.

Contraindications

Safety is of the utmost importance. For this reason, patients who should not consider lip augmentation with Juvéderm® products include:

  • Those who are allergic to the gram-positive bacterial proteins used to make Hyaluronic Acid
  • Patients with severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis)
  • Women who are allergic to the numbing agent lidocaine (AKA lignocaine and xylocaine)
  • Those who are prone to bleeding

What’s the First Step?

Your Dermal Fillers Journey with Skinjectables

After you arrive at the Skinjectables Cosmetic Clinic in Toronto for your lip injection consultation, you will meet with a Nurse Injector to assess your overall health and suitability for the procedure and to discuss your goals and expectations for lip enhancement.

It is essential to be transparent and open about your expectations and medical history. Be prepared to answer questions like:

  • What outcome do you expect from the procedure?
  • What is your current use of alcohol or tobacco?
  • What medications, vitamins, or supplements are you currently taking?
  • What medical conditions or drug allergies do you have that you know of?

What Does a Nurse Injector Need to Know About Me?

During your consultation, you need to be prepared to provide your Nurse Injector with:

  • A list of your current medications (prescription and over-the-counter), vitamins, and herbal supplements. If you take a multivitamin, please write down its name.
  • Information related to any drug allergies or if you are allergic to latex.
  • Your medical history. This information should include surgical procedures, treatments, and chronic conditions (e.g., diabetes, high blood pressure, etc.).

Your Toronto Nurse Injector also needs to know if you:

  • Are pregnant, breastfeeding, or attempting to become pregnant. Prior to your treatment, please inform your Nurse Injector if any of the aforementioned apply to you—the safety of dermal filler injections during pregnancy or while breastfeeding has yet to be determined.
  • Have an injury near the injection site. Unless the procedure is rescheduled until the injury heals, your chances of experiencing side effects increase.
  • Are on medications for immunosuppressive therapy, or if you take blood thinners (e.g., warfarin, aspirin, etc.). These medications can increase the likelihood of bleeding or bruising at the lip filler injection sites.
  • Are taking Advil®, Aleve®, Excedrin® and Ibuprofen. These medications must be discontinued for at least a week prior to your lip injection procedure.
  • Have a history of scarring or pigmentation disorders. In addition, if you are planning to have a chemical peel or laser treatment after receiving your Toronto lip filler injections, you should ask your Nurse Injector how long you need to wait. Otherwise, there is an increased risk of inflammation following these kinds of treatments.
  • Are experiencing any type of skin problem in the area(s) being treated with a Teosyal® or Juvéderm® product. These problems may include cold sores, rashes, cysts, or pimples, which can be located in or around the mouth. Lip filler injections should be postponed until the problem dissipates; otherwise, healing may be delayed or the skin problem being experienced might worsen.
  • Are prone to facial herpes simplex (aka cold sores). Your Nurse Injector can prescribe medication to prevent such an outbreak following treatment with lip fillers. Medications commonly used for this purpose include Valtrex, Acyclovir, and Famvir.

Questions to Ask Your Injector About Lip Injections

After you arrive at the Skinjectables Cosmetic Clinic in Toronto for your lip injection consultation, you will meet with a Nurse Injector to assess your overall health and suitability for the procedure and to discuss your goals and expectations for lip enhancement. It is essential to be transparent and open about your expectations and medical history. Be prepared to answer questions like:

  • What is your current use of alcohol or tobacco?
  • What medications, vitamins, or supplements are you currently taking?
  • What medical conditions or drug allergies do you have that you know of?

What to Expect on the Day of Lip Injection Treatment

Prior to beginning the lip injection procedure, your Nurse Injector will use a topical anesthetic to numb your lips. It takes about 20 minutes for this anesthetic to reach its full potential. Once the numbing agent takes effect, the lip enhancement procedure will begin. Besides the topical anesthetic, all of the fillers we use contain the numbing agent lidocaine. This ensures that patients remain comfortable throughout their lip enhancement procedure.

Step 1 – Your specialist chooses the injection points.

Step 2 – Antiseptic and numbing cream are applied to the area.

Step 3 – The dermal filler is carefully injected into the lip.

The Hyaluronic Acid in Teosyal® and Juvéderm® adheres to the skin. The water contained in hyaluronic acid assists in volume retention beneath the skin’s surface. Since water is naturally drawn to Hyaluronic Acid, the lips become more voluminous.

Lip Fillers Recovery

Quick & easy recovery

Your lips may appear puffy or slightly swollen for a few days after the injection procedure. The recovery period and downtime, however, are minimal. Patients who undergo lip injections can go back to their normal daily routine very soon after treatment. Any numbing agents should begin to wear off shortly after the procedure.

After receiving post-treatment instructions from your Nurse Injector, you can walk out of the clinic and resume your daily routine with no downtime and minimal interference in your life.

Take it easy and avoid making any big plans (such as a wedding or important event) for the few days after the procedure in case you experience any swelling or bruising.

You should not exercise on the day of the procedure, before or after receiving the treatment, and you may want to avoid exercise for one to two days afterward. You should also avoid activities that increase blood flow to your face, such as getting a massage or facial.

Directly following lip filler injections, patients should expect to experience swelling. This swelling typically lasts only a few days, but it may persist for 1 to 2 weeks. After the first day, lipstick can be used to cover any bruises that appear on the lips.

Patients should avoid touching their lips for 48 hours. Additionally, exercise should be avoided for 24 hours because it increases blood flow, which can further exacerbate swelling.

If you notice any symptoms that seem abnormal, progressive, or painful, please contact our office immediately at 416.546.5200.

Removal of Hyaluronic Acid Lip Fillers in Toronto

Products that contain HA can be removed either completely or partially with hyaluronidase. This enzyme dissolves the Hyaluronic Acid particles.

Issues that hyaluronidase can address include:

  • An irregular or lumpy texture (that fails to respond to massage)
  • Prolonged or excessive inflammation
  • Infection within the treatment area
  • Lips that appear ‘overfilled’
  • Vascular compromise caused by the filler being injected extremely close to a blood vessel, causing interference with the natural blood flow. (When a qualified, experienced injector performs the lip injection procedure, a vascular compromise is extremely unlikely.)
